This essay briefly describes the current state of the Americans public’s knowledge and involvement in news, geography, and politics, citing both anecdotal and formal academic examples. First, this essay describes the American public’s knowledge and involvement in news. Then, this essay describes the American public’s knowledge and involvement in geography. Finally, it describes the American public’s knowledge and involvement in politics. American Public’s Understanding and Involvement in News The American public has very little understanding and involvement in the news. It is assumed that the people are stupid, ignorant, disregarded, and that they seek unreliable sources of information about important news events (Shenkman 14). The two causes that suggest this is that the public is either uninterested or is not well-informed. Anecdotal example The American public has almost no understanding and involvement in the news. The younger generation, specifically, finds absolutely no interest in the news and believes that it is irrelevant. For example, â€Å"when one college teacher required a class to listen to NPR for an hour, one student summed up the general reaction to the experience by calling it ‘torture’† (Shenkman 27). This shows that students do not understand the importance of politics and are rather bored with the current news.
